When Polygon first revealed Kinect PlayFit with the promise of universal fitness tracking and a heart rate monitor, I was intrigued. As a Chicagoan with an aversion to gyms, there are large parts of the year when Kinect is my main method of injecting a little fitness into my life. Naturally, I was excited when Kinect PlayFit suddenly dropped in the middle of last week, but this quickly gave way to disappointment as my wish list of potential features came face-to-face with the uninspired reality.

A look at the new Sales & Specials + app
Microsoft has always been good about offering reduced price content to Xbox Live Gold members, but it hasn’t always been easy to find. With the release of the new Sales & Specials + app, this is set to change. In addition to the traditional Deal of the Week section, Microsoft is expanding their deals selection for both free and Gold accounts. So, what’s new?
NBA, NHL, and ESPN bringing more sports to Xbox
Microsoft has been pushing the Xbox as the go-to way to watch sports, and their E3 presser revealed that they aren’t going to stop anytime soon. Starting in their respective next seasons, the NHL and the NBA will be available to watch via Xbox Live similar to the way that MLB and UFC are currently. In addition, Microsoft is expanding their partnership with ESPN to provide 24/7 programming featuring shows from ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, and ESPNU. It’ll include things like “SportsCenter” and “The Mike and Mike Show”, as well as ESPN’s MLB, NBA, and NFL coverage. There is also a new Kinect-friendly sports hub, accessible by saying “Xbox, sports”. Check out Major Nelson’s blog for all the details.

Favorites coming to Xbox dashboard
The Microsoft E3 event showed off what appears to be a completely revamped dashboard. While we’re still waiting on the details of exactly what that will look like, Marc Whitten just revealed that one of the upgrades is something we’ve been requesting for a while. Evidently Microsoft got the memo, because starting this Fall you will now be able to add your favorite games and media to the home page of your dashboard. According to Whitten:
Favorites allows you to personalize the dashboard by saving your movies, TV, games, music and the web right to the home screen in the dashboard. Favorites will make it easier and faster than ever to get to your favorite content on Xbox and Xbox LIVE.
