SmartGlass support in all future first-party games

While speaking to Joystiq at E3 Phil Spencer, Corporate VP of Microsoft Studios, revealed that SmartGlass will support all of the company’s games after it goes public in the fall. SmartGlass will be a simple app that includes your Gamertag and decides what features are available for whatever you are playing or watching. Phil Spencer described it as, “You don’t have to log in and out of each app – you know, ‘I’m gonna start the Mass Effect app, and now I’m gonna start the Game of Thrones app.’ So you have this surface, this smart surface that sits on any device that you already own that’s always in sync with what’s happening on the television, and it knows where to go and grab the right content to display at the right time, to make sure that if you’re playing Halo, then the Halo surface is available on SmartGlass.”

We hope to see more on Smart Glass in the future and look forward to the possiblites it brings to Kinect. After all just look at Homerun Stars and that is only the first announced Kinect game that will be utilizing SmartGlass. You can most definitely color us interested.

Weekday Rant: Thoughts on Microsoft’s E3 so far

The biggest gaming event of the year has officially kicked off, and the first day of E3 2012 has already come to a close. It’s hard to believe how quickly this week goes by every year. Regardless, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Nintendo and Sony have all held their press conferences and brought out their biggest guns to show off just what their vision for the next year or so of gaming looks like. As always, the forums and social media are ablaze with reactions of excitement, disappointment, fan boy bliss, and everything in between. Here are my thoughts on what we we’ve seen so far.

Homerun Stars outed

The previously unheard of game, Homerun Stars, was outed via Gameinformer today. Earlier in the day they ran a story on SmartGlass much like we did and mentioned “a holiday baseball title called Homerun Stars”. The general idea of the game is for SmartGlass users to pitch a ball to a gamer on Kinect and in reverse. This was all that was mentioned of the game but expect to hear more if it is releasing this holiday. It sounds like a great of use of new technology and seems as though it would be pretty fun. If anything else is revealed about Homerun Stars at E3 be sure to check back here.

Smart Glass app seems pretty smart

Microsoft has supposedly revealed to content partners an unannounced app titled “Smart Glass” that is an Apple AirPlay-style app. It will allow AirPlay-style uses on the Xbox 360 whether it be via iOS, Android, or Windows Phone 7. It will allow users to “push” different types of media from the previously mentioned devices to the Xbox 360. This idea sounds pretty cool so hopefully we will hear more at E3.
