Get XBLA Kinect title Haunt for free

Update: As noted by Twitter friend @ChrissyTheBairn and confirmed by Major Nelson, this is US only and will last until July 2.

Although it was a bit on the easy side of things, we were big fans of Haunt back when it launched. Now there is almost no reason to not try it, as it is available for free on the Xbox dashboard. Here’s how you can get it: You’ll need to be signed in to Xbox Live, but it doesn’t matter if you have a Silver (free) or Gold account. On the home tab, click on Kinect Central (the top-right box). On the first screen you see the featured box should say “Get Haunt for free”. Click it. It’s that easy! Let us know what you think of the game if you do get around to picking it up.

Thanks to @kitlerc for tipping us off to this great deal.

Haunt review (XBLA)

Haunt was developed by developed by NanaOn-Sha and Zoë Mode and was published by Microsoft Studios. It was released January 18, 2012 for 800 MSP. A copy was provided by the developer for review.

Everyone has heard some variation on the story of the person who is forced to spend the night in a haunted mansion, only to be subjected to all manner of nightmarish visitations. With images like the above, Haunt would appear to be something in the survival horror vein, probably some twisted version of the haunted house schtick. Luckily, it’s anything but! Haunt is actually a family-friendly Kinect XBLA title featuring a light-hearted (but still slightly spooky) romp through the mansion of a deranged eccentric, Benjie Muldoon.

At the beginning of Haunt you find yourself awoken by a voice calling out to you. As it turns out, this voice is the owner of the mansion (wonderfully voiced by Tim Schafer of Double Fine), who is trapped in the portraits of the building and needs your help recovering some “Phantaflasks” that ghosts have stolen and hidden from him. You’ll use one hand to aim your trusty flashlight while using the rest of your body to dodge, duck, punch, open doors and cupboards, and make all manner of other zany motions. As you make your way through the mansion, you’ll encounter new and exciting enemies, explore different areas, and learn more about the history of the mansion and its crazy owner.

Haunt hitting XBLA on January 18

Microsoft Japan announced a January 18 release date for Haunt, a horror themed Kinect game from NanaOn-Sha, the studio behind PaRappa the Rapper. The game will be priced 800 Microsoft Points and promises a horror experience suitable for all ages. The game’s desription on Xbox Marketplace is as follows:

Welcome to Benjy’s Mansion – a spooky haunted house where you are the first visitor for a generation! Haunt leverages the power of Kinect to enable you to freely explore the house using just your body as the controller – you’ll need to stay on your toes in order to outsmart the mansion’s host of fiendish ghosts and unravel the sinister secrets that shroud the mansion in mystery!

Haunt is aiming to be a horror game but it looks like it has more of a Disney’s Haunted Mansion vibe than a horror vibe. One bit of cool trivia is that Double Fine’s Tim Schafer will be voicing the main NPC in the game, so look forward to hearing his dulcet tones come Wednesday. Check after the break for a short gameplay trailer to give you an idea of what to expect out of this interesting Kinect XBLA title. Read the rest of this entry »
