Comcast Xfinity, HBO Go, and MLB.TV on Xbox Live now

Today three of the eagerly anticipated video apps have launched on Xbox Live and are available for download. These apps are Comcast Xfinity, HBO Go, and MLB.TV.

Strangely, up to this point MLB.TV hasn’t really been discussed all too much on Xbox so here is a quick rundown. All Gold subscribers will get one free game a day on the MLB app as well as game recaps but other than that an MLB.TV subscription will be required to view games. The 2011 season is already archived and can be watched it all its glory. There is also a mini schedule that can be pulled up while watching a game to see what other games are happening at the same time. Split-screen viewing is also supported which is fantastic news for baseball fans. There is Kinect functionality and the games will be streamed in HD at 720p.

Entertainment dominates multiplayer gaming on Xbox Live

With the continuing release of more and more entertainment options for Xbox Live, such as Comcast and HBO Go applications recently added, Microsoft has unveiled some interesting statistics in support of these moves (not that they needed support). As reported on The Verge:

Xbox Live Gold members in the US are now spending an average of 84 hours per month on Xbox Live, with entertainment app usage more than doubled year on year. Globally, this has led to a 30 percent increase in the total hours spent on Xbox Live around the world.

While there are no numbers available to show how much time users spend playing multiplayer games, Microsoft has stated further that Xbox Live users in the US are spending more time exploring movie options, television and music than diving into head-to-head matches. These simple statistics alone suggest that more is most likely on the way, as Microsoft probably wouldn’t want to rest while the uses for the company’s gaming console are being revolutionized into more of a broad-based entertainment device.

HBO Go Kinect Preview

HBO Go logo

HBO just released a little teaser video for the HBO Go app on Xbox. With the video only being 30 seconds not too much information was revealed but some big news was dropped. First the app will support Kinect with voice commands which is fantastic. The app also looks very streamlined and easy to use which is also a plus. Honestly with this little video the April 1st release date can’t come much sooner.

HBO Go coming to Xbox on April 1

Nope, it’s not a joke. HBO Go is coming to Xbox on April 1, bringing quality shows like Entourage, Sex and the City (aka lady Entourage), Eastbound and Down, and Game of Thrones straight to your favorite set top box. Currently HBO Go requires a subscription to a cable provider, which would seemingly make having it on Xbox a little redundant. On the other hand, now you’ll be able to control it with Kinect. “HBO! Next episode!” Millions of productive voices just cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.
