Double Fine Happy Action TV now Kinect Party

This weekend at PAX Prime, Double Fine Productions announced that Double Fine Happy Action TV will now be known as Kinect Party. That’s perfectly fine by us, since a good amount of the Xbox Kinect Fan’s staff’s parties already revolve around partying with a Kinect. If you’re interested in what is different in the sequel to Double Fine Happy Action Theater, read our previous story here.

Double Fine Happy Action Theater sequel debuted via live stream

As promised earlier in the week, Tim Schafer’s gang at Double Fine Productions revealed the sequel to Double Fine Happy Action Theater via live stream on Giant Bomb last night. Like its predecessor, which is available now on the Xbox Live Marketplace for 800 MSP, the Happy Action Theater Sequel is essentially a collection of Kinect driven mini-games that put players in outrageously fun situations. If you’ve ever wanted to turn yourself into a fire breathing dragon and destroy cities one second, and then dodge pigeon stool in a park the next, Happy Action Theater is the franchise for you.

Building on the first Happy Action Theater, Double Fine has created seventeen brand new mini-games for the sequel, several of which are shown off in the nearly 40 minute demo of the game which can be viewed in the video above. Its worth noting that there is a mini-game dedicated solely to dubstep at the 33:00 minute mark that is simply a must see. Additionally, the team has added the ability to quickly frame photos taken during gameplay and upload them to Facebook to share with your friends, like some form of deranged digital post card. Double Fine has also promised that players who own the original Happy Action Theater who buy the sequel, will unlock all eighteen of the first title’s mini-games, in the new Happy Action Theater, literally doubling the amount of happy action to be had.

While the tentatively titled Happy Action Theater Sequel doesn’t currently have a release date or official price, we’re expecting it to hit Xbox Live Arcade sometime before the end of the year. We highly recommend that you view the video above to get a proper look at the game and understand the hi-jinks that awaits players. You can check out our review of the original Happy Action Theater here, if you’re still considering giving the original game a go. And if it’s Double Fine’s wild and wacky antics that have you intrigued, make sure you check out the Double Fine Productions “Primer” feature over at our sister XBLA Fans. Finally, be sure to stay tuned for more information on the Happy Action Theater Sequel right here at Xbox Kinect Fans.

Double Fine to unveil Happy Action Theater sequel this Friday

The fine folks over at Giant Bomb will have the privilege of unveiling the sequel to Double Fine’s Happy Action Theater this Friday according to Giant Bomb co-founder Ryan Davis, who announced the news to the world on Twitter. While details on the sequel itself are scarce, rumors are floating about that the game will be live streamed over the internet for its coming out party. Additionally, word has it that the game will be playable at PAX Prime, which kicks off on August 31st.

The original Happy Action Theater (available now on Xbox Live Arcade) is essentially a collection of Kinect driven mini-games. The creative and twisted minds at Double Fine force players to do everything from avoid molten lava, to dodge pigeon feces while playing the game which literally takes over your living space thanks to Kinect’s unique abilities. It’s hard to imagine what kinds of crazy situations the development team may have thought of this time around. Lucky for us, we only have to wait until Friday to find out! If you’re interested in learning more about the original Happy Action Theater, check out our review.

For those unfamiliar, Double Fine Productions has become a household name within the gaming community. Headed by the legendary Tim Schafer, creator of Grim Fandango, Double Fine has touched a wide variety of genres, bringing their unique brand of fun and humor along with them everywhere they go. From the mind bending platformer Psychonauts, to the action-strategy and heavy metal hybrid Brutal Legend to downloadable titles like the Iron Brigade, Costume Quest and Stacking the Double Fine logo has become something of a seal of quality to many gamers. Double Fine also developed Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster, which marked their first, and certainly not their last foray into Kinect territory. If you’re willing to attempt to wrap your mind around the madness that is Double Fine Productions, check out the Double Fine Primer feature over at our sister site, XBLA Fans.

Expect a lot more coverage of what we’re calling Happy Action Theater 2 here at Xbox Kinect Fans in the coming days!

Double Fine Happy Action Theater sequel in development

Despite the fact that your family swimming in a pool of lava may initially sound rather morbid, Double Fine found a way to make this experience entertaining with the release of Happy Action Theater earlier this year. Double Fine Happy Action Theater is one of those rare games that allows all the members of your family to get involved in the video game action — even those who do not typically comprehend how to interact with a video game. That is why we were pleasantly surprised to hear the news of a Double Fine Happy Action Theater sequel currently in development.  Below is an excerpt of the SFWeekly article revealing some of the initial details.

“They’re building the sequel to Happy Action Theater, a “video toy” published by Microsoft this year. It uses Microsoft’s Kinect controller, a camera that transforms body motion into videogame action. In a recent meeting, designers spent two hours brainstorming different outlandish sequences for the game, such as one where a fox plays bongo drums on a series of eggs, out of which hatches a miniature version of the player.”

While the idea of seeing a miniature versions of ourselves hatching from a fox egg sounds… interesting, we’re more interested to see what other ideas the brilliant minds at Double Fine develop. Tim Schafer, founder of Double Fine, did not mention a tentative release date for the sequel during the reveal. Stay tuned as we’ll be sure to bring you much more coverage of the game as it becomes available.

Deal of the Week discounts collection of XBLA Kinect titles

Beginning today, Microsoft is discounting the entire collection of Kinect enabled Xbox Live Arcade games, giving Kinect owners the opportunity to swoop in on a motion sensing marathon at a fine price. Kicking off the sale from the top is the classic Fruit Ninja Kinect, which is selling for 560 Microsoft Points. While it is the most “expensive” game included in the sale, it is also the most successful and most widely known.

Every other game included in the sale is selling for 400 Microsoft Points, representing a 50% price reduction. Leading the way is Double Fine Happy Action Theater, followed by NanaOn-Sha’s haunted house ride Haunt. Next up is a pair of Konami titles represented by Leedmees and Hole in the Wall. For more information on each game, simply click its title above. If you’ve been holding out on picking any of these up, the prospect of saving money makes this sale a great opportunity to jump in and join the fun. The sale will end on May 21st.

Check out after the break for links to the marketplace and reviews where applicable.

Wednesday Wish List: New games, new ideas and new experiences

Kinect is an unique product. There have been similar products in the past but none have been executed as well as or have sold as well as Kinect. People have flocked to it because it is different. Motion controlled gaming has existed before, with the Wii being the most prominent, but never without any controller whatsoever. What else can be expected then from a different control input than a different type of game?

Tim Schafer talks Happy Action Theater and more

Tim Schafer has been coming up in the news a lot the past 24 hours, mostly due to the ridiculously popular Kickstarter that Double Fine is running right now. If you’re interested in knowing a little bit more about Double Fine and the last bunch of games that they made, we stumbled across this great interview that Gamasutra did with Tim. The first half is mostly about the development process of Happy Action Theater, and delves into some pretty interesting technical details of the Kinect. The second half of the interview discusses the rest of the “Amnesia Fortnight” games, including Costume Quest, Stacking, Iron Brigade, and the Kinect title Once Upon A Monster. It’s definitely worth a read if you’re interested in Kinect technology, Double Fine, or any of the games we just mentioned.
