Skyrim 1.7 update out today

For Xbox 360 users worldwide, today marks another Skyrim update from Bethesda. In the 1.7 patch, many bugs are fixed, including some dragon-related bugs crashing games when said dragons land. Among the other bugs are stability issues, animation errors and new water shader tweaks.

Specific to Kinect, this new patch fixes some voice command errors players were previously frustrated with, tweaking the recognition. The update also tackles some dragon-language and Dawnguard-related shouts for the French, German, Italian and Spanish languages.

Madden NFL 13 has over 6,000 voice commands

As reported on Eurogamer in a recent interview with game designer Victor Lugo, Madden NFL 13 will have over 6,000 voice commands at the disposal of Xbox 360 gamers. Among the many terms and words that can be shouted at the Kinect, the designer mentioned something called “dynamic grammars”.

As Lugo summarized, “What dynamic grammars do is take text and dynamically load it in, the name of the characters you have, your custom audibles and basically uses phonics to sound it out.”

What does this mean? Apparently, gamers can type their names into the game and be able to say them in a command. This also extends to the ability of implementing custom audibles, giving players some free reign to set unique commands.

To what extent does this work? We aren’t quite certain now, but we’ll know soon enough as that August 28th release date nears.

What we are playing: August 5

What we are playing is a weekly column published every Sunday in which various members of our team let the world know which games have had them hooked over the past week and which ones they’re looking forward to.

Ryan Reynolds- I went on a shooting spree this week. In videogame form of course. I played a whole lot of the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive beta on PC. I can’t wait to pick the game up on 360 and finally take my place atop the Counter-Strike community, with a controller! I also played a fair share of Modern Warfare 3, Mass Effect 3 and Halo: Reach as well. My hype for Halo 4 is really beginning to build. Furthermore, I downloaded and played the trials of Deadlight and Outland on Xbox Live Arcade, but neither really grabbed me, so I didn’t purchase either.

Nick DePetris- I sort of videogamed myself out after my intense Deus Ex marathon last weekend, but I did play a couple hours of Fallout: New Vegas and fired up The Witcher 2 for the first time. I also finally beat Dance Central 2 on easy. 5 stars on every song, which is impressive if you’ve ever seen me try to dance.

Sean Prideaux- I played Planet Crashers and Deadlight early on in the week; both of which are reasonably entertaining. Then I played a little of both Rage and Darksiders. I’m trying to get Darksiders finished on apocalyptic before 2 comes out, though I’m not likely to pick it up anytime soon.

Ryan Fennel- An XBLA focused week for me. I completed Deadlight and have mixed feelings regarding it. While it was definitely enjoyable, the second act of the game was way too much trail and error for my tastes. I also put in some time with Wreckateer. I think Wreckateer will go down as the best Kinect game of 2012 — others just don’t compete with the precise controls in this game.

Andy Tran- I’m on vacation, but still managed to get some gaming squeezed in. I’ve gotten my strategy craving quenched from Age of Empires Online. And then a little more Zombie Driver courtesy of Steam’s cloud saves moving from my desktop to laptop.

Scott Waldyn- This week was an adventure into something unique and different. I jumped into Deepak Chopra’s ‘Leela‘. It’s a lovely little new age stoner trek into self-fulfillment and a calming connection to the universe. I enjoy it. It’s a great way to center a stressful day.

Now that you know what we’re playing, let us know what you are playing! Tell us by leaving a comment below!

Job posting hints at multiplayer for Crytek’s Ryse

Ryse

Many fans of Kinect walked away from this year’s E3 expo disappointed that Microsoft didn’t show off or even talk about the new first-person action-adventure Ryse from Crytek, the minds behind shooters like Far Cry and Crysis. While the powers at be are still remaining tight lipped on the project, a new job posting may have given us our first update on the title since its announcement. It appears that the development team is looking to add a Multiplayer Producer to their ranks, which of course infers that Ryse will feature some sort of multiplayer mode. While the lack of multiplayer is more the exception than the rule these days, this does further hopes that Ryse could deliver as one of the first “hardcore” Kinect driven titles on the market. Just imagine waging war with the weapons of the Roman Empire with, or against your friends.

Originally announced at E3 2011, Ryse has been missing in action since its public debut. Rumors have stemmed from the game’s no-show at this year’s E3 that its development may have been moved to the next Xbox, where Crytek can take advantage of advancements in both graphical technology, as well as Kinect. This much is certain; Ryse is alive and well, will likely feature multiplayer judging by the latest reports, and is one of the most hotly anticipated Kinect titles in development.

Homerun Stars Screenshot

It’s been a few weeks, but there still has been no confirmation that the above screenshot is definitely from Homerun Stars, an upcoming Kinect-based XBLA baseball title. 123Kinect, however, is pretty certain, as mentioned in this article. The argument also seems to make sense, and a cursory glance over the picture would satisfy any onlooker that this, most certainly, seems to be Homerun Stars. Would Microsoft make it that easy though? Or is there something else lurking in the shadows?

Could Need for Speed: Most Wanted be better with Kinect?

[springboard type="youtube" id="g9-L8oYmXtg" player="xbla001" width="640" height="360" ]

Electronic Arts either inadvertently broke some news, or accidentally designed the Xbox 360 box art for Criterion’s upcoming Need for Speed: Most Wanted reboot with a purple stripe on it when they released a new four minute video of the game in action. The purple stripe on Xbox 360 box art is normally where the “better with Kinect” tagline is placed. Astute readers over at Videogamer caught the stripe of color in question, which EA has still yet to comment on. If you’re a Kinect owner and a racing fan, keep your fingers crossed that this is actually by design and that Need for Speed: Most Wanted will indeed support Kinect when it ships on October 30th in the US. This is just one more reason for your frothing demand to grow even stronger! We’ll bring you more news on the story here at Xbox Kinect Fans as it develops.
