Newsbits: Microsoft renews Killer Instinct trademark

Microsoft recently renewed the trademark for Killer Instinct, the fan favorite fighting franchise created by Rare that launched during the Super NES era. Normally, the renewal of a trademark wouldn’t be such a big deal. It’s a standard business practice. But unlike most standard business procedures however, PlayXBLA, the official (Microsoft operated) source for all things Xbox Live Arcade related made an announcement to the public that the trademark had been renewed. It’s almost as if they are looking to build excitement, on purpose. This has fueled several rounds of speculation;

  • Since the announcement took place on an XBLA website, many speculate that Microsoft will simply bring the original Killer Instinct to Xbox Live Arcade.
  • It has been revealed by former Rare employees that Rare once sought to revive the franchise with a new high-definition entry for the Xbox 360, but that at the time, Microsoft wasn’t interested. Could we see a new Killer Instinct title emerge in the near future?
  • Finally, because Rare has focused solely on Kinect development since the accessory’s launch, some speculate that we could see a new Kinect enabled Killer Instinct, perhaps for Microsoft’s next-console, where the next iteration of Kinect will be much more powerful.

Where the truth lies, we’re entirely unsure, but the fact is, something does seem to be up. Companies don’t normally celebrate simple legal procedures. If any of Microsoft’s plans for the Killer Instinct franchise do involve Kinect, you can count on Xbox Kinect Fans to bring you the news when it breaks. In the mean time, check out our Primer feature on Rare, which delves into the history of the studio and their franchises, including Killer Instinct.

Rumor: Kinect 2 body tracking image leaked

The above image has hit the internet courtesy of DaE, a supposed developer in possession of a development kit for the next Xbox, which is codenamed “Durango”. The image is said to be a body tracking image from the next iteration of Kinect, which is said to be built into the next Xbox, as opposed to sold as an attachment like with the Xbox 360. As you can see, the image shows a more distinct outline of the two figures on screen as opposed to the current Kinect technology, and clearly picks up a hand, with fingers that is in front of the larger figure’s body. Are we getting our first look at some of the advancements next-generation will bring to Kinect? While it is unlikely that we will get a confirmation as to whether the image is legitimately from a Durango development kit or not, speculation is already spreading across the web like wild fire. We’ll let you be the judge. Leave us a comment below and tell us what you think!

Job posting hints at multiplayer for Crytek’s Ryse

Ryse

Many fans of Kinect walked away from this year’s E3 expo disappointed that Microsoft didn’t show off or even talk about the new first-person action-adventure Ryse from Crytek, the minds behind shooters like Far Cry and Crysis. While the powers at be are still remaining tight lipped on the project, a new job posting may have given us our first update on the title since its announcement. It appears that the development team is looking to add a Multiplayer Producer to their ranks, which of course infers that Ryse will feature some sort of multiplayer mode. While the lack of multiplayer is more the exception than the rule these days, this does further hopes that Ryse could deliver as one of the first “hardcore” Kinect driven titles on the market. Just imagine waging war with the weapons of the Roman Empire with, or against your friends.

Originally announced at E3 2011, Ryse has been missing in action since its public debut. Rumors have stemmed from the game’s no-show at this year’s E3 that its development may have been moved to the next Xbox, where Crytek can take advantage of advancements in both graphical technology, as well as Kinect. This much is certain; Ryse is alive and well, will likely feature multiplayer judging by the latest reports, and is one of the most hotly anticipated Kinect titles in development.

Could Need for Speed: Most Wanted be better with Kinect?

[springboard type="youtube" id="g9-L8oYmXtg" player="xbla001" width="640" height="360" ]

Electronic Arts either inadvertently broke some news, or accidentally designed the Xbox 360 box art for Criterion’s upcoming Need for Speed: Most Wanted reboot with a purple stripe on it when they released a new four minute video of the game in action. The purple stripe on Xbox 360 box art is normally where the “better with Kinect” tagline is placed. Astute readers over at Videogamer caught the stripe of color in question, which EA has still yet to comment on. If you’re a Kinect owner and a racing fan, keep your fingers crossed that this is actually by design and that Need for Speed: Most Wanted will indeed support Kinect when it ships on October 30th in the US. This is just one more reason for your frothing demand to grow even stronger! We’ll bring you more news on the story here at Xbox Kinect Fans as it develops.

Angry Birds Trilogy Price & Release Date Potentially Revealed

Announced earlier this year, Angry Birds Trilogy is a compilation of Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, & Angry Birds Rio that intends to make full use of both Kinect and standard controlling.  Outside of the games to be included in the trilogy little was known about the game.  However, it appears that Amazon may have let the cat (err bird?) out of  the bag regarding the potential pricing and release date for this on-disc retail release.

According to Amazon, the title will be released in the United States on October 16, 2012 for $39.99!  As for those in the UK, Base.com is listing a price of £29.99 with a release on October 26, 2012.

It is hard to imagine there not being some backlash to this potential price, considering that all of the  titles included in the trilogy can be purchased on the iTunes App store for less than 1/4 of this price.  On the bright side, if the game’s Kinect controls are half as fun as Wreckateer, it may be a great game to pick up — when it drops a few dollars in price!

Rumor: Press Play developing On Sketchy Grounds for Kinect?

Back at this year’s E3 convention in Los Angeles, Microsoft announced that they had acquired Press Play, developers of the multiplatform Max & The Magic Marker (pictured above) as well as a mobile game called Tentacles for Windows Phone. While Microsoft Gaming Studios’ agenda for Press Play has remained a mystery since the announcement of the acquisition, the European Union (of all sources) may have just let the cat out of the bag. A title called On Sketchy Grounds from Press Play has been announced as the recipient of funding from the EU. The document announcing this investment elaborates stating that On Sketchy Grounds builds upon the foundation laid by Max & The Magic Marker, which required players to drawer things with an imaginary crayon, to advance. So where does this all lead? Speculation is building that On Sketchy Grounds will be a Kinect title, with players using motion control to draw the objects they need to succeed in the game. Have to get across that water filled chasm? No problem, just draw yourself a bridge and on you go!

When you begin to put the pieces together, it does indeed paint a picture that makes sense. If Press Play is creating a new Kinect title in On Sketchy Grounds, Microsoft may have been so intrigued with it (the game) and the studio’s talent, that they decided to add Press Play to the Microsoft Gaming Studios family. Dedicating the developer to the creation of new Kinect experiences for the foreseeable future doesn’t sound too unreasonable either. With that said, the majority of this story is considered rumor and should be taken as such. Until we hear more, all we know is that the recently acquired Press Play is developing a game called On Sketchy Grounds that is being partially funded by the European Union.

Rumor: Rare working on multiple next gen games

Rare, Microsoft’s flagship Kinect and Avatar developer, is rumoured to be working on multiple next-gen titles. The news comes in the form of a job ad listed on Microsoft’s careers site here for a “Principal Program Manager”; there was a second listing but it has been removed. The listing that was removed did say this: ”You will be joining a highly regarded publisher-backed studio that is responsible for a number of IPs currently on the market that have already hit number 1,” and ”Whilst continual development of their core releases will be maintained, the successful candidate will be joining at a time where the studio is looking to move into new areas and develop new IPs for future platforms.”

There is also a mention of experience in making games of the Action/Adventure or FPS genre, and as Rare has a rich heritage in both of these genres it may be a nod towards reboots in those particular series. As Rare is now primarily a Kinect developer, we can be sure that their Kinect titles won’t be swept away like Battletoads. So if we’re lucky, maybe they will make a Perfect Dark that’s compatible with Kinect.

Rumour: More new Mass Effect 3 DLC info leaked

Earlier today, the Hong Kong based branch of Sony slipped up and accidentally revealed new multiplayer DLC for Bioware’s Mass Effect 3. Assuming Sony’s sources were legitimate, the DLC (which is called the Rebellion pack) will include;

The Rebellion Multiplayer Expansion opens two new fronts against the Reapers: Firebase Jade’s jungle reservoir and Firebase Goddess on Thessia. In-game reinforcement packs now include three new weapons as well as equipment, consumables, and six new classes: Quarian Engineer and Infiltrator, Vorcha Soldier and Sentinel, Phoenix Adept and Vanguard. The battle continues – hold the line!

While the Vorcha would be make a nice addition, the “Phoenix” race mentioned above has never been mentioned in any other Mass Effect lore, and the two Quarian classes are already in the game. So where does that leave us? Is the Mass Effect 3 Rebellion Multiplayer Expansion real, or is it wishful thinking? Only time will tell.

Rumor: Microsoft to track your fitness activity with Kinect Play Fit

TheVerge.Com is reporting that Microsoft will soon unveil Kinect Play Fit, new software that will be built into the Xbox 360 dashboard that will track your exercise and workout activities across appropriate fitness themed Kinect titles. Additionally, Microsoft will release a heart rate monitor accessory called “Joule” that will work across multiple Kinect titles that will allow you to track your own vitals and make sure they’re in line with your weight loss, strength training, or cross-fitness goals. While there are no indications as to when the Kinect Play Fit update will go live (and if it will cost money), or when the Joule accessory will ship, we expect to hear Microsoft detail the whole shebang at E3 which is now just a few weeks away. Stay tuned fitness freaks.

Harmonix is making something new

Harmonix is currently recruiting for a mysterious new IP, which will be a unique motion gaming IP. You can see that there are several jobs listed here but certain ones are affiliated with the new project. The Narrative Designer sports the following description “incorporate creative story lines into gameplay on a unique motion-gaming IP”. No platforms are mentioned but considering the heritage Harmonix has, Kinect is most probably on the cards. Whatever it is, we’re definitely going to be interested in what this becomes.
