Minecraft rocking XBLA on May 9

The most common question resounding on the Twitter feed of our sister site XBLA Fans of late has been “When is Minecraft coming?”. Well, according to Major Nelson and PlayXBLA (Microsoft Studios), the answer to that is May 9. They’ve also revealed that it will be releasing at the top price point of 1600 MSP, probably due to the popularity of the title, the expanded feature set, and the promise of constant upgrades to keep it in line with the PC version. Unfortunately, the Kinect functionality will not be available at launch, but you can take a gander at the version dropping May 9 in the announcement video from Microsoft after the break (Minecraft coverage starts around 1:15).

BAFTA Winners and Nominations

The British Academy Video Games Awards, BAFTA, winners list was released on March 16th. There were multiple Kinect games up for consideration. In the category of Game Innovation was Child of Eden which lost to LittleBigPlanet 2. There were also two games nominated from the Kinect in the category of Family, they were Kinect Sports 2 and Dance Central 2, which were both fantastic games. Unfortunately they both lost yet again to LittleBigPlanet 2. Luckily there were three different Kinect games nominated in the Sports/Fitness category. They were Dance Central 2, Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012, and Kinect Sports 2. Kinect Sports 2 won the award with Dance Central 2 close behind. There was even a special award given to Mr. Markus Persson for creating Minecraft and becoming a sort of rally cry for indie developers everywhere. Minecraft is coming to XLBA Kinect sometime in the Spring of 2012.

New Kinect Content On the Xbox Marketplace

There has been plenty of new content added to the Xbox Marketplace recently. A demo was recently launched for the game Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure which appears to be a sort of Kinect Adventures type game. The demo is launching alongside the disc version of the game. Not to mention that the fantastic game Kinect Sports which launched alongside the Kinect has been added to Games on Demand for 30 dollars. DLC has also been released for Yoostar on MTV for 160 points. The title of the DLC is “I want to move out!” All this new content should be able to keep your Kinect running for days with fun new material.

BBC iPlayer (UK only) release is free for all

BBC iPlayer has finally arrived in the UK on the 360. After being on the Wii and PS3 for ages, it is now available with all the features that the PS3 version has; such as HD but also allows for Kinect support. It features motion control as well as voice recognition to navigate the various screens. The app is completely free for anyone living in the UK, so you won’t need Gold to use it. Also you don’t need a TV licence for it as all the content that you can watch is played back after the initial screening. While you won’t get everything that shows on the BBC’s channels you get a majority of the programs with normally around 30 days to watch a program after its initial airing.

Dragon’s Lair XBLA

Dragon’s Lair was a laserdisc video game published by Cinematronics in 1983. The player controls the hero’s reflexes rather than his actions so there was either a right or wrong input but never any real choice. The game was quite expensive for its time, 50 cents a go, but is remembered fondly in the hearts of gamers everywhere. That being said the game has had numerous ports over the years consisting of platforms such as iPhone, GameCube, and the Wii.

At last, Dragon’s Lair is coming to XBLA. The game is coming sometime in the future but no official date is known as none was provided. The only way we know Kinect is part of the game is via a screenshot with a Kinect motion hint. The game was super fun to play back in the day and still holds up to date.  A release date for this game shall be eagerly awaited.

New Head of Microsoft Studios Europe

Phil Harrison

A few days ago Microsoft announced that the former Sony Computer Entertainment and Atari member Phil Harrison has joined Microsoft as the corporate vice president of its European Interactive Entertainment Business. He will be overseeing the whole division which consists of Rare Ltd, Lionhead Studios, and Soho Productions. Harrison himself said, “I am excited to be joining the senior team at Microsoft at a pivotal time for our industry, I am really impressed with the company’s long-term vision for growing the market for interactive entertainment globally and also with the incredible wealth of talent, technology and resources the company has available to succeed.”

There were rumors that he would be taking over Peter Molyneus’s spot as Lionhead Studios boss but Major Nelson himself said, “Phil’s role on the IEB leadership team is completely unrelated to Peter’s departure.” It was also announced that the Lionhead studio manger role is being filled by Lionhead COO Mark Webley. Hopefully Mr. Harrison brings new ideas to the table and will continue to innovate in this industry.
