Time to Update Your Xbox LIVE Security

Over the last twelve months, many Xbox gamers became aware of the lack of online security instituted by Microsoft for Xbox Live. A very common hack during that time frame was for users’ accounts to be hijacked and used to buy an enormous amount of content in EA’s FIFA 2012. The widespread nature of this issue caused sites, such as Hackedonxbox.com, to be launched in order to raise awareness.

Thankfully, Microsoft has made increasing Xbox 360 security an initiative.  In a recent post on the Xbox forums, Xbox LIVE General Manager Alex Garden identified improvements to security and how to best protect your gamertag.  As staff of Xbox Kinect Fans have personally felt the wrath of the notoriously known FIFA hack, we do not hesitate to encourage everyone to read all that Xbox LIVE General Manager Alex Garden has to say regarding the security improvements at Xbox.

For those who would rather just have the bullet-point overview of what was covered, here is a breakdown provided by Microsoft regarding improvements:

  • We’ve taken legal action to pull down online posts of gamertags, usernames and passwords gathered from malware or phishing schemes to help protect our members.
  • Our Xbox LIVE Spring update included many behind the scenes improvements that help us build on security enhancements for the near future.
  • We’re sending unique codes to the security phone numbers and secondary email addresses provided by members to verify authorization for Xbox.com purchases or account change attempts not stemming from a member’s trusted device.
  • We’re working to reduce market incentives for criminal activity. Engaging in identity theft, trading in stolen accounts and committing credit card fraud are illegal and violate our Terms of Use. Those involved in these activities risk criminal prosecution, account and console bans. That goes for both sellers and buyers of known stolen accounts and content.

If any of you have had your account hacked, we would love to get your feedback on Mr. Garden’s forum post.  Do you think Microsoft is doing enough to protect its customers?  Sound off in the comments below.

‘Avatar Famestars’ Program Starts Rewarding Your Hard Work This Week

This Wednesday the highly anticipated Kinect title, Wreckateer, will be released as part of the XBLA Summer of Arcade promotion. If that were not great enough news, it has been revealed that Wreckateer will be the first title to make use of Avatar Famestar. What is Avatar Famestar you ask?

Microsoft describes Avatar Famestar as a new program that will be utilized by a select group of games to deliver “exciting ways to play online with your friends and compete for social recognition.” An ideal way to think of this new program would be to view it as a cross-game achievement system. Gamers will earn points for completing particular achievements across supported games. These points can then be redeemed for a variety of prizes (such as avatar awards)! Many gamers have long been hoping for some sort of reward system for earning achievements, and this may finally be Microsoft’s answer.

The next logical question has to be what other titles will support this program? Avatar Famestar will retroactively support already released XBLA titles Full House Poker and A World of Keflings. Furthermore, upcoming releases Fire Pro Wrestling, Homerun Stars, and Avatar Motocross Madness have been identified to support the program.  Sadly, no details were provided regarding when Avatar Famestar support will be integrated into any of the aforementioned titles.

In its current state, Avatar Famestar will only be supported for Xbox 360 owners.  No information has been provided regarding support for Surface, Windows 8, or Windows Phone.

My Xbox LIVE iOS App Updated for iPad Owners

Weeks ago, the My Xbox LIVE iOS app was updated to allow mobile devices to control their Xbox 360 in a handful of scenarios. However, iPad owners were left out in the cold on this functionality. Thankfully, Major Nelson revealed via Twitter that Version 1.6 has added the following functionality for the iPad iteration of this application:

Use your iPad with your Xbox to connect, control and discover content on your console. Connect your iPad for access to a quick list of your most recent console activity. Control your content with play, pause, fast forward and rewind media controls. Find fresh entertainment to play in the new Discover section.

It should be noted that this is not part of the SmartGlass technology revealed at E3 this year. If this app is just the tip of the iceberg for iOS/Xbox integration, the future is absolutely looking bright. It will be interesting to see what else is up Microsoft’s sleeve to combat the Wii U’s potential release this fall!

If you are looking for more information regarding the application check it out right here.

Angry Birds Trilogy Price & Release Date Potentially Revealed

Announced earlier this year, Angry Birds Trilogy is a compilation of Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, & Angry Birds Rio that intends to make full use of both Kinect and standard controlling.  Outside of the games to be included in the trilogy little was known about the game.  However, it appears that Amazon may have let the cat (err bird?) out of  the bag regarding the potential pricing and release date for this on-disc retail release.

According to Amazon, the title will be released in the United States on October 16, 2012 for $39.99!  As for those in the UK, Base.com is listing a price of £29.99 with a release on October 26, 2012.

It is hard to imagine there not being some backlash to this potential price, considering that all of the  titles included in the trilogy can be purchased on the iTunes App store for less than 1/4 of this price.  On the bright side, if the game’s Kinect controls are half as fun as Wreckateer, it may be a great game to pick up — when it drops a few dollars in price!

Dance Central 3 releasing this fall

Microsoft has revealed during their E3 press conference that the best selling dance series, Dance Central, will be releasing a third entry this fall. Dance Central 3 will introduce a new mode with support for up to eight players. The music featured during the demonstration covered a wide range from the 1970s to present.

One artist primarily featured during the conference was Usher, who will be providing his music to the sequel. While the Usher performance during the presentation may not have been for everyone, there is no denying that Dance Central 3 looks to continue to improve the series.

We will keep you posted as more track list information is provided.
