Dance Central 3 released

Are you ready for another round of Dance Central? This latest iteration boasts one of the most impressive setlists for a dancing game. From rock groups like Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” to classic boy band tributes like Backstreet Boys’ “Everybody”. Even a disco oldie “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor, and a most interesting overseas shipment from South Korea’s girl group 2NE1 with “I Am The Best”. This will definitely spark some creativity with “Party Mode” allowing players to make their own moves. The game’s out now, so you can get moving on a Kinect hit!

You can find the complete list here.

Dance Central 3 movie trailer

If you are excited about Dance Central 3 then you need to tighten your belt because your pants are about to be surprised off. The trailer is more reminiscent of a movie trailer than a video game about dancing. Until you get to the part where you are a “Dance Central Operative” – then you realize come October 16th that you’ll be playing a dancing game who doesn’t take themselves too seriously.

Weekend Rant: Annual iterations of shooters

Hello fellow gamers, I’m here to talk about a disturbing trend in video game development. Like nearly everyone else in the gaming world, I’m sure you’ve played your fair share of first person shooters, be it triple-A blockbusters, one hit wonders, or free-to-play. But there’s a certain shooter trend that I’m not too fond of and is quickly watering down my experience. It’s the annual iteration model that is growing so popular within the genre.

Some would call the first-person shooter space oversaturated right now. Call of Duty, Battlefield, Counter-Strike, and Medal of Honor are just a few big names competing for your attention alongside a multitude of free-to-play titles.  Each year, depending on the sales figures of the previous entry in a given triple-A FPS, many studios get a bigger budget for the sequel. This cycle – in theory – is a great thing. Players get more of what they want and developers get to make the next title even stronger for the fans that love to play it. Unfortunately there’s also something called the marketing department. They determine the best way to use money and collect data as to see where money can best be used to make more money.

Xbox Kinect Fans Most Wanted: Pictionary

Since the dawn of online gaming, millions of gamers have found new ways to connect with their friends. Online gaming has made it possible to “hang out” with your friends, without being in the same room, building, or even country. On top of this advancement, a new wave of casual games have attracted new and different audiences to videogames. To continue building the user base of Kinect, Microsoft can and should take advantage of these trends by seeing that classic and instantly recognizable experiences make their way to the Xbox platform, with Kinect functionality. Many modern families enjoy playing videogames together, but there are those that have long time traditions of playing other things, like board games – one such classic board game is Pictionary.

No matter how fun Pictionary is, not all families can stay at home all the time to enjoy each others company to play it. Be it college, vacation, or a job away from home, the fact is, the modern family probably isn’t able to be “together” all the time. That means they can’t enjoy classic boardgames like Monopoly, Scrabble and of course, Pictionary. The solution is simple: play it on the Kinect! Not only can it simply be played on the Xbox 360, but also over Xbox Live where we can use beacons to set up play dates that work for everyone and help bring families “together”.

Harmonix talks developing for Kinect

Designing for the Kinect is already a challenge with such impressive technology and the expectations of utilizing its power in a new way. Ryan Challinor of Harmonix has made two hit Kinect titles whose ingenuity rivals that of a first-party Microsoft game. While at E3 promoting the third iteration of Dance Central, Gamasutra snagged an interview with Challinor.

In this interview he covers a few challenges and attributes of developing for the Kinect. Everyone that owns a Kinect has seen how there’s a slight lag in the movement tracking and feedback from a game. Challinor masks this by “pulsing imagery over the player’s on-screen projection in time to the beat”. This is one innovative way to create a more fluid experience for players.  Another facet of Kinect design is showing the player feedback in order to let them know that the gesture recognition is working. This helps connect the player by showing them that their actions have an active part throughout the game.

Harmonix also came into the Kinect game swinging with their background of music games. This gave them the upper hand because the player is following along to a predetermined action. So the camera knows what the player will be doing instead of fumbling trying to determine a player’s capricious movements. His last bit of advice is to develop from a foundation that you are creating a Kinect game. “You need to start from the simplest interaction, and then build a game on top of this interaction that works.”

With developers like Harmonix advancing Kinect game design and mechanics we should begin to see many more studios become inspired by their innovations.

New Splinter Cell Kinect info

In a recent interview with videogamer.com, Splinter Cell: Blacklist’s producer Andy Wilson weighs in on Ubisoft’s inclusion of Kinect in their new title. Voice recognition is already used in their current title Ghost Recon: Future Soldier to control the Gunsmith portion. Now it will be used in a novel way to control Sam Fisher’s team and the environment in the game.

Using the Kinect to call or whistle in order to create a distraction was essential to include as part of Sam’s predatory arsenal. You’ll also be able to call in support when the moment is right since Sam Fisher is now the leader of Fourth Echelon. “We’re going to have these moments spread throughout the game across all of the different missions.” It’s clear that Ubisoft is dedicated to integrating Kinect into their titles to further immerse the player in the game’s experience – hopefully for us it will pay off with innovative, exciting gameplay.

First wave of NUads coming this fall

Have you ever seen an ad and thought to yourself, “That is such a terrible way to get me to buy something” or “Whoa, now I’m interested”. Something we don’t think about every day is that all these advertisements require research in order to evoke certain feelings from viewers. And what better way to gather research than through the millions of Xbox 360 owners. Starting this fall, Xbox LIVE will be host to NUads – a wave of adverts that receives real-time feedback. This gives brands a way to gauge how consumers react to their advertising strategies and products.

“NUads and the gesture – and voice based Kinect technology have a great potential for creativity”, said Babs Rangaiah, vice president of Global Media Innovation at Unilever. Viewers will be able to say “Yes, of course” or “No way” to ads or just use hand gestures. This relationship goes two ways – it also helps companies understand their customers and see what features about a product matters to them.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier review (Retail)

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier was developed and published by Ubisoft. It was released on May 22nd, 2012 and retails for $59.99 MSP.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is the next installment of futuristic warfare in the Ghost Recon series. Once again, Ubisoft has gone into the uncharted territory of futuristic warfare with an iteration using combat drones, EMP grenades, and a real-time augmented reality HUD. There were fears that the large gap in time between Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2  and Future Soldier had taken the strategy out of the series. It was warranted since many shooters are moving towards the high spectacle run and gun action in the dust of Call of Duty, but once you pop in GRFS and begin your first mission you’ll know that strategy still plays an important role in your survival and the completion of objectives.

Another aspect of the game – like many other shooters – is multiplayer. There was a lot of thought that went into the different modes: Conflict, decoy, saboteur, siege, and guerilla. Each one offers new avenues of continuous play and variety. Multiplayer isn’t just tacked-on at the end of development, it was created as a standalone beast for gamers to tackle. There are too many different facets to each mode to cover them all, but each is worth checking out and earning ranks and weapon unlocks.

Weekend Rant: Why Durango’s exclusion of used games would be good

Check out the companion piece to this week’s Weekend Rant, Nate Hubler’s Why Durango’s supposed exclusion of used games is bad.

Hello readers, my name is Andy Tran and I’m a new staff writer here at Xbox Kinect Fans. I – just like you –like to save money. I turn to places like GameStop, Craigslist, friends and family for a used games so I don’t have to fork over fifty or sixty hard-earned dollars for each game I play. I get to save money and someone else gets to make money on a game we won’t be playing again. Right? Wrong. The result is the death of the well-polished single-player game.
